Healthy Traveling

When traveling these days, people are becoming ever more cautious about staying healthy during their trip. Whether it is finding ways to combat the common cold, doing what you can to fight germs, or increasing your awareness of the swine flu around the area.

Other trip related activities can also contribute to an unhealthy you. Carrying heavy luggage and walking long distances between terminals will unnecessarily tire you out and may fatigue your immune system. Even being stuck in a traffic jam with a car full of antsy children can take a toll on your body.

When at all possible find ways to relax and rejuvenate your body’s defense system. You may find that relaxing on a hammock is peaceful or taking a well-deserved nap.

Check Up To Check Out

With the ever increasing pandemic over the H1N1 influenza, or swine flu, travelers are being more cautious then ever and being proactive to stay healthy and well.

If you are planning an overseas trip, make sure to visit your doctor and the Centers for Disease Control for updates on infectious diseases that may be prevalent in the area you are traveling to. These diseases could include, cholera, tuberculosis, yellow fever, influenza, and many others, so it is important to get the right vaccinations and be aware of the dangers. The World Health Organization also will provide you with accurate and reliable information on pandemic vaccines and international health issues.

Stay Healthy Along the Way

It’s important to be aware of potential hazards not only when you arrive at a destination, but when you are in transit. Being couped up in an airplane with people sneezing and caughing is bound to make at least someone else sick. By doing your part to prevent these sicknesses from traveling to you, you will stay healthy for the upcoming trip. It is important to wipe your hands often with antibacterial wipes or antibacterial sanitizer. Not only can you use these to protect your physical body, but you should use them to clean the environment around you. It may be a good idea to clean the airport seat and its surroundings, items in the hotel room, seats in the taxi, and other public areas that you may come in contact with.

Airport employees are even being cautious by checking your health as you pass through a thermal scanning device. This device checks your temperature either orally or in the ear. Such measures are being enacted to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic viruses.

Some international airlines have even gone as far as to not allow passengers to board the airplane who exhibit flu-like symptoms. In many countries, like China and Japan, immigration officials are boarding new passengers immediately after landing the airplane so that they can check each passenger’s health. If someone unintentially is overlooked who is sick, the rest of the passengers onboard may face quarantine. It seems like these actions are a little dramatic, but at least more airlines are traveling with healthy travelers as opposed to before when almost anyone was permitted boarding.

A fear of many overseas travelers is if they become sick while at their destination. If you are not used to medical practices in a foreign country, it can be kind of scary to visit an office. Most countries have a U.S. Consulate that you can contact for assistance in obtaining local medical attention. There are two directories that may help you when trying to find a reliable physician when overseas. First, you may want to contact the International Society of Travel Medicine, who maintains a directory of healthcare professionals in neraly 50 countries. Second, you can join the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers, which has a directory of English-speaking physicians, hospitals, and clinics for any member who requires healthcare abroad. Sometimes seaking medical care in a foreign country can get expensive, so try to do what you can before seeking this option. Sometimes even the hotel staff may be a big help to you when you need a little TLC and are bedridden. Room service can bring you a cup of hot milk and chicken noodle soup when you are feeling a cold come on.

Local Traveling

You may just be traveling to a nearby state, visiting the sights. It doesn’t really matter if you are overseas or in the next state, using good healthcare precaution is always going to keep you safe from the many ailments that are out there.

If you are taking a road trip, make sure that things are organized and stress and chaos is kept to a minimum by providing various activities for the kids to do in the backseat. This will not only keep them occupied, but will keep you stress free, thus keeping you healthier.

When traveling around town to visit the many wonderful sights, make sure to keep a first aid kit with you in case of an emergency. You wouldn’t want to run all the way back to the hotel just to get a bandaid. Especially in the hot summer months, make sure all of your traveling companions are well hydrated and fed. There is almost nothing worse than visiting sight after sight, when it’s hot and you don’t have any cool water or snacks to keep your energy up.

When you do all that you can to travel healthy, the experience will be even better. By preventing sicknesses from occuring, your trip will be successful. When one person is sick, the rest of the crew usually ends up sick, so try to plan your travel when your family is healthy and full of energy. Even though you may plan and prevent as much as you can, there really is only so much you can do, and the rest is up to fate. If you maintain a cautious attitude, things will run smoothly.
